Biochemistry Undergraduate Reading Program (BURP)

Undergraduate Extracurricular, University of Washington, Department of Biochemistry, 2023

BURP is a quarter-long extracurricular study program for undergraduates interested in exploring the scientific literature. Undergraduates are paired with a mentor, and the two read papers together over the quarter, culminating in an optional symposium around Finals week. Since its inception, BURP has served over 100 undergraduates and 50 mentors in the UW Biochem community. Read about BURP in UW Biochem’s January 2024 Newsletter.

Biochemistry II: Intermediate Metabolism

I was a graduate student TA for Biochemistry II under Profs. Dana Miller and Liangcai Gu. Our text was the Lehninger “Principles of Biochemistry” by Nelson and Cox. I took notes during lecture, prepared explanatory slides each week, and held twice-weekly recitation sections for students. I worked closely with the teaching staff, synchronizing during weekly instructional meetings, and when grading course exams.

Biochemistry I: Protein Structure and Function

I was a graduate student TA for Biochemistry I under Profs. Justin Kollman and Susan Brockerhoff. Our text was the Lehninger “Principles of Biochemistry” by Nelson and Cox. I worked closely with the teaching staff, synchronizing during weekly instructional meetings, and when grading course exams.

Physical Chemistry III: Statistical Mechanics

I was an undergraduate TA for Thermodynamics under Wei Kong, selected because of my performance in the course the previous year, and my personal interest in the subject. Our text was “Physical Chemistry” by Silbey, Alberty, and Bawendi (2004). Because the course was remote, I illustrated concepts to students using an iPad, working through practice problems, and checking the work of students in the Zoom room. I worked closely with the teaching staff, synchronizing during weekly instructional meetings, and when grading course exams.
